92 BPM · 24 bars
Sahur Call
The round as it actually sounds: three knocks, a shout, and a village turning its lights on.
The track is missing its drum, and you are the drum. Play the sahur beat in time and the street lights up behind you — miss it and the whole street stays asleep.
The track is missing its drum. You are the drum — and every note you land wakes another window.
The written songs, at the difficulty you pick. Each one ends, gets a grade, and can be beaten.
Nudge it later if you hear the beat after you see it — Bluetooth headphones and TVs both do that. Calibrate sets this for you.
How far ahead you can see. Slower notes are easier to read; faster ones are easier to time.
How to Play
Notes travel left along the lane into the ring on his drum. Play each one as it arrives — not when you see it coming, when it gets there.
An amber circle is a tung: the deep hit in the middle. A blue diamond is a tak: the dry tap on the rim. A long purple bar is a sahuuuur you hold down.
Every note you land lights another window. Every note you drop puts one out. Let the street go fully dark and it stays asleep — the song stops there.
The Set List
Each one is the same round at a different hour of it: the call itself, the long walk, and the last street before the sun. They are composed, not generated, so they are the same every time you play them.
92 BPM · 24 bars
The round as it actually sounds: three knocks, a shout, and a village turning its lights on.
118 BPM · 28 bars
Halfway down the street with most of it still dark. The beat starts leaning on the off-beats.
138 BPM · 28 bars
The sky is already going grey and there are three streets to go. Hands up.
Game Modes
Songs · 3 tracks
Three written songs at three difficulties, each with a grade and a best score on file. This is the one to learn on: they are composed rather than generated, so they are the same every time.
Arcade · No last bar
Bars are dealt out one after another, getting faster and busier, and they do not stop. The only thing that ends it is the street going quiet, so the score is really a measure of how long you lasted.
Once a day · 5 squares
Twenty bars seeded from the date, always at Normal, so everyone gets exactly the same chart today. Your first run counts, and it leaves a shareable grid and a streak.
One gauge does three jobs: it is how awake the street is, how close you are to losing, and what a miss actually costs. It starts at 42% and the windows on screen are it.
Get the street to 100% and every window on it is lit: he turns golden for 8 seconds, everything is worth double, and a miss barely stings. Then it is spent, and has to be earned again.
Every ten notes in a row is another half on the multiplier, up to ×4. A missed note or the wrong drum takes it back to one, which is what makes a clean run worth more than a loud one.
Timing
A rhythm game is only as honest as its clock. This one runs the song off the audio clock rather than the frame clock, so a slow frame moves the picture and never the beat — but nothing in a browser can measure how long your headphones take. That part it has to ask you.
Tips
Most first runs lose the street somewhere in the third section, where the off-beats start. The runs that finish are the ones that stopped watching the notes and started listening to the shaker.
Play along with the shaker, not with the picture. The lane tells you what is coming; the groove tells you when.
Alternate hands. Tung on one finger and tak on the other, always the same way round, and the fast bars stop being fast.
The wrong drum on time still scores, but it breaks your combo. When in doubt about which one it is, play it anyway.
Hold a sahuuuur right to the end of the bar. Letting go early counts it as missed, and it is worth more than a bar of taps.
Start on Easy even if you are good at these. It is the same song with the off-beats taken out, so the skeleton you learn there is still true on Hard.
Run the calibration once. Everything else in here is guesswork until the game knows how late your speakers are.
When the street drops under 20% the gauge turns red. That is three or four misses from over — stop reaching for notes you have already lost.
Devices
There is no app, no APK and no installer. It is a web page, so if the browser opens, the song starts.
The Story
Before dawn during Ramadan, someone walks the neighbourhood banging a kentongan to wake everyone for sahur. Tung Tung Tung Sahur is that drum — his name is the sound of it, three knocks and the word. So this is not a rhythm game with him bolted on: the job was already a rhythm, and the point of it was always the windows coming on behind you.
FAQ
These are about the rhythm game. For the meme — the name, the origin, the lore and who owns him — see the full FAQ. Would rather move than keep time? Tung Tung Runner is the rooftop one, and Find Tung Tung Tung Sahur is played entirely by ear.
Notes come down a lane into the ring on his drum, and you play each one as it arrives. Amber circles are tungs — the deep hit — and blue diamonds are taks, the tap on the rim. Long purple bars are held. Land notes and the street wakes up; drop them and it goes back to sleep.
It is generated in your browser while you play, note by note, with the Web Audio API. Nothing is streamed and no audio file exists. That is also why the drum answers the instant you press a key — there is no sample to fetch.
Because it is. The bass, the shaker and the little melody are all there and the drum part is not — that part is yours. Land the notes and the song is complete; miss them and you can hear the hole where the beat should have been.
Probably not. Check the gauge under the ring: if your ticks all sit on the same side of centre, your timing is consistent and your audio is late. Bluetooth headphones routinely add 100–300 ms. Run Calibrate by Tapping on the menu and it will measure it and correct for it. Inside ±45 ms counts as Perfect once the offset is right.
A window goes dark, your combo resets and the street gets a little less awake. Miss enough in a row and the street hits nought per cent, everyone rolls over, and the song stops there. How much a single miss costs depends on the difficulty.
They are the same song through a finer sieve rather than three different charts. Easy keeps the quarter notes, Normal the eighths and Hard every sixteenth that was written. The shape of a song is the same at all three, so nothing you learn on Easy is wasted.
Yes. It is seeded from the date, so every player gets the same twenty bars today, always at Normal so the scores compare. Only your first run each day is recorded; after that you can practise as much as you like.
Yes, and it is a real rhythm game muted: the notes are on screen, the beat lines mark every bar, and the count-in is drawn as well as clicked. You lose the pleasure of hearing the beat you are filling in, but nothing you need to play is only in the audio.
On Easy, mostly — one hit a beat and no fast alternations. Normal and Hard expect one thumb on each half of the screen, because they are written for two hands the way a drum is.
It is free, with no account, no download and no ads. Your grades, best scores and daily streak are saved in your browser, so clearing site data resets them.
Yes. No violence, no chat, no ads and no sign-up. Easy is genuinely easy, and the worst thing that happens in the whole game is that a street goes back to sleep.
Because he is a drum. A kentongan drummer walks the neighbourhood before dawn in Ramadan waking people for sahur, and a rhythm game is the closest a browser gets to actually doing that job. More about who he is.
No. It is an independent, fan-made game inspired by the meme. The artwork is original, the songs were written for it, and every sound is synthesized live in your browser.
